10,000 people a year die from asbestos-caused diseases in the United States, including one out of every 125 American men who die over the age of 50. For the last 150 years, asbestos was considered an ideal material for use in the construction industry. It's an excellent fire retardant, has high electrical resistance, and was inexpensive and easy to use. This has led to it's widespread use. The problem with asbestos arises when the fibers become airborne and are inhaled.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2011) — Scientists have found that individuals who carry a mutation in a gene called BAP1 are susceptible to developing two forms of cancer -- mesothelioma, and melanoma of the eye.
