What Caused the Meltdown: A Financial Crisis FAQ
In March 2008, Bear Stearns, one of the largest investment banks and securities trading firms in the world, rapidly fell apart. The firm could no longer raise private capital to fund its day-to-day activities and, with billions of dollars in liabilities, faced bankruptcy. Fearing a collapse of the investment bank would set off a chain of financial institution bankruptcies, the Federal Reserve partnered with JP Morgan Chase to provide a $29.5 billion bailout for Bear Stearns. While there were many... Author: anthony.randazzo@reason.org (Anthony Randazzo) 1151 Hits, 0 Comments, Added On 1/24/2010 10:00:00 PM |

Five Uncomfortable Facts About the Wonderful, Horrible Debt-Limit Debate
It's all debt limit, all the time, it seems. Everyone's talking about what may or may not happen when the U.S. government finally butts up against its legal borrowing limit on August 2. That's the date that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the feds will max out the credit lines that account for about 40 percent of all current spending. A quick explanation for the uninitiated: The debt limit or debt ceiling concept dates back to 1917. Prior to that date, Congress had to specifically approve... Why a Sports Stadium Can't Save Baltimore (or Other Cities)
Okay, I admit I got caught by Marta Mossburg's satirical riff on Baltimore's economic development policies published in the Baltimore Sun on March 15th. I should have looked at the headline, which referenced the view from 2021, and the substance of the article. But, alas, the truth is that Mossburg was keying into real-world sentiment and public policy. Many public officials actually do believe that simply spending more money on nifty projects will bring their cities back. They won't, and the academic... Against Cosmopolitanism
All science fiction agrees. History is leading to the unification of earth. The united world may be governed by benign world federalism or by a dystopian global tyranny. But the modern literature of prophecy is clear: the age of competing nation-states is coming to an end. There are no visions of the future in popular culture in which advanced technology is combined with the continued sovereignty and competition of nation-states like China, India, and the United States or blocs like the European... Asbestos, a Hidden Killer! Asbestos Death
10,000 people a year die from asbestos-caused diseases in the United States, including one out of every 125 American men who die over the age of 50. For the last 150 years, asbestos was considered an ideal material for use in the construction industry. It's an excellent fire retardant, has high electrical resistance, and was inexpensive and easy to use. This has led to it's widespread use. The problem with asbestos arises when the fibers become airborne and are inhaled. Author: 2292 Hits, 6 Comments, Added On 2/15/2012 1:11:49 AM |

Genetic link to mesothelioma discovered
ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2011) — Scientists have found that individuals who carry a mutation in a gene called BAP1 are susceptible to developing two forms of cancer -- mesothelioma, and melanoma of the eye. Additionally, when these individuals are exposed to asbestos or similar mineral fibers, their risk of developing mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer of the lining of the chest and abdomen, may be markedly increased. Stopping SOPA’s Anti-Circumvention
The House’s Stop Online Piracy Act is in Judiciary Committee Markup today. As numerous protests, open letters, and advocacy campaigns across the Web, this is a seriously flawed bill. Sen. Ron Wyden and Rep. Darrell Issa’s proposed OPEN Act points out, by contrast, some of the procedural problems. Here, I analyze just one of the problematic provisions of SOPA: a new”anticircumvention” provision (different from the still-problematic anti-circumvention of section1201). SOPA’s anticircumvention authorizes... Author: 176 Hits, 0 Comments, Added On 12/15/2011 8:35:16 AM |

Declare Defeat and Go Home
"The war on drugs has failed," declared the editors of National Review in 1996, back when the nation’s foremost conservative periodical promoted ideas more intellectually rigorous than cheerleading for the Republican Party. "It is diverting intelligent energy away from how to deal with the problem of addiction. . . .It is wasting our resources, and . . . it is encouraging civil, judicial, and penal procedures associated with police states. We [here at NR] all agree on movement toward legalization,... Author: info@reason.org (A. Barton Hinkle ) 330 Hits, 1 Comments, Added On 6/7/2011 7:30:00 AM |
